COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CLU Wastes a Big Effort by O’Donnell

Despite Simon O’Donnell’s game-high 27 points and 17 rebounds, the Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team came up short in a nonconference game at home Wednesday night, falling to La Verne, 84-81.

With Cal Lutheran trailing, 82-78, Jeff deLaveaga made a three-point basket to cut the margin to 82-81 with 11 seconds left. But on the ensuing inbounds pass, La Verne’s Mark Loomis broke loose and caught a baseball-style pass downcourt. His uncontested layup was the game’s final basket.

Cal Lutheran (8-10) received 26 points from deLaveaga.

In other men’s games:

Glendale 66, West L.A. 64--With Glendale leading, 66-63, West L.A.’s Booker Waugh was fouled on a three-point attempt with 12 seconds left, but he could convert only one of three free throws in the Western State Conference Southern Division game.

Canyons 91, Bakersfield 85--Dan Murphy and Reggie Bell each scored 17 points for host Canyons (14-12, 4-1) in a WSC Southern Division game.

Antelope Valley 115, Chaffey 102--Tony Madison scored 35 points, including seven three-point baskets, and J. R. Rider, who has scored more than 30 points in 10 consecutive games, added 32 and 13 rebounds for Antelope Valley (20-4, 10-1) in a Foothill Conference game at Chaffey.

Occidental 117, Claremont-Mudd 115--Sanoy Brown scored a team-high 32 points to lead host Occidental (11-8, 4-2) to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win. WOMEN

Valley 65, Santa Monica 57--Valley made its last 10 free throws and 13 of 14 in the second half to avoid its second loss in a row in a WSC Southern Division game.

Tisa Rush led Valley (23-4, 4-1 in division play) with 13 points.

Pierce 78, Glendale 30--Luisa Parra scored 23 points off the bench and Mireya Coronado added 15 points as Pierce coasted to a WSC win at Glendale.

Chaffey 67, Antelope Valley 65--Three Antelope Valley players fouled out and the Marauders played the final 13 seconds with four players in the Foothill Conference game at Chaffey. With Chaffey trailing, 65-64, Chrissy Sweeney converted a three-play to give Chaffey the win.
