The Times’ mid-season assessments of high school basketball had the customary “bests” and “mosts” but also took some odd turns.

Mixed in with the typical categories--such as Best Team (Fountain Valley) and Best Player (Ocean View’s Wayne Carlander)--were a few that were not entirely expected:

Best PA Announcer--Nick Fuscardo of Troy.

Most Visible College Recruiter--Mike Bokosky of UC Irvine.

Best Dressed Coach--Mike King of Capistrano Valley.

But the best had little to do with basketball:

Happiest Coach--Newport Harbor assistant Larry Doyle, whose wife retired as undefeated champion on the TV game show “Blockbusters” with $50,800 in cash.

Doyle is now the athletic director at Marina.

Despite being nicknamed the Saints, Santa Ana’s basketball team was getting into a lot of trouble.

In a 52-41 victory over Tustin that put Santa Ana alone in first place in the Century League, Bobby Joyce was involved in two altercations, one that led to a bench-clearing brawl and Joyce’s ejection. It was the third fight for Santa Ana in 10 days.

“Where’s the integrity?” Tustin Coach Tim O’Brien said. “Joyce threw the ball in my kid’s face, and it wasn’t even a flagrant foul. Just when things calmed down, he (Joyce) sucker-punched my guy.

“Santa Ana has a reputation for this. They fought with Foothill, and I heard they got into it with Canyon Wednesday night. We don’t need this.”

Santa Ana Coach Greg Coombs stopped just short of defending Joyce: “I told Bobby at halftime to keep his cool. He was getting that (taunting) the whole game. He’s 15 years old and would only take so much. . . .

“Everyone is going to say it’s our fault, but I’ll invite anybody to watch our films and they’ll see it hasn’t been our fault in any of these incidents. We’re a young team that everyone wants to beat. It seems like the other teams get frustrated at the end of the game when they’re losing. A Canyon player took a swing at Scootie (Lynwood) the other night out of frustration. You taunt a 15-year-old kid for 30 minutes, and see what happens.”

O’Brien was unimpressed: “So they were taunting him? Is that an excuse to start throwing punches?”

Misunderstood or not, Joyce now plays for national champion Nevada Las Vegas, and Santa Ana is playing peacefully as the new team in the Sunset League.

Amy Jalewalia set a girls’ single-game Orange County record by scoring 60 points in an 85-32 victory over Kennedy in the Garden Grove League. The previous record was by Whittier Christian’s Cindy Vyskocil, who scored 59 in the 1986-87 season.

Jalewalia, who now plays for UCLA, made 25 of 38 shots and eight of 10 free throws. She also had 15 rebounds.

“When I made the half-court shot (that banked off the glass at the end of the first quarter), I sensed my shooting luck was coming back,” Jalewalia said. “I haven’t shot very well the last couple of weeks, but our team scoring has been more balanced.”

La Quinta Coach Kevin Kiernan was relieved that Jalewalia got the record. He had pulled her with six minutes left after she had scored 51 points in a game the year before.

“We were ahead, 50-2, at halftime, and I felt badly for Pacifica, so I took her out,” Kiernan said. “I never thought she would have another chance at the record. I felt I may have cost her a chance at a prestigious record. Tonight was a total surprise, Kennedy is a good team.”
