More than 300 people gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for the Costa Mesa Senior Center.

The $2.3-million project is scheduled for completion early next year, said Jeffrey Hovsepian, development director for the Costa Mesa Senior Corp., which will operate the facility.

Plans for the 20,127-square-foot, two-story building call for a large meeting and dining area, with a kitchen, library, game room, sun room, classrooms and administrative offices.

The city hopes to make the Senior Center a hub for senior activities.

The large turnout was “a direct result of how badly people want this center,” Hovsepian said. “It has been coming for so long, we’ve been working so hard behind the scenes with proposals and recommendations, and nobody has seen that. This is the first big physical thing that they can see.”

The City Council recently awarded the building contract to Camco Construction Co. of Newport Beach.
