Orange Coast College has been awarded a $375,000 matching grant from the Harry and Grace Steele Foundation to renovate the college’s 1,200-seat Robert B. Moore Theatre.

The 18-month matching grant requires that the college raise an additional $375,000 for the project by July 31, 1992.

The first phase of the three-phase theater-revitalization project is expected to cost about $1.2 million.

“It will dramatically improve the theater, allowing it to join the Orange County Performing Arts Center and South Coast Repertory as a third jewel in Costa Mesa’s ‘City of the Arts’ crown,” college President David A. Grant said.

The college hopes to add air conditioning, new seats, enhanced acoustics, new lighting, an upgraded electrical system and improved access for the handicapped. The second phase will feature the addition of a complete fly-loft for the stage. The final phase will include the addition of an enclosed lobby, new ticket offices and a complete remodeling of the restrooms.

So far, the college has received $565,000 for the theater-renovation project.
