COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Jackson’s Hot Shooting in Stretch Leads Ohio State Past Purdue, 66-59

Jim Jackson took control of the game in the final four minutes to lead Ohio State to a 66-59 Big Ten victory over Purdue at Columbus, Ohio, Sunday.

Jackson, who scored 22 points, had eight of them down the stretch when the No. 3 Buckeyes were outscoring Purdue, 15-6.

Ohio State, which lost at Michigan State, 75-61, Thursday night, moved to 18-1 overall and 8-1 in the Big Ten. Purdue fell to 11-8 and 3-6.

Jimmy Oliver led the Boilermakers, who had won their past three meetings against Ohio State, with 22 points and Chuckie White had 15.

The Buckeyes, 10-0 at home, had led by as many as 13 points in the first half on the way to a 36-28 advantage at halftime.

But Ian Stanback scored four points in a 6-0 run that put the Boilermakers ahead, 41-40, with 15:08 remaining.

The victory marked the first time since 1979 that Ohio State has been 8-1 in the Big Ten.

No. 4 Indiana 77, Minnesota 66--Freshman Damon Bailey scored six of his 10 points during a 17-1 second-half run as the Hoosiers (20-2, 8-1) survived 30% shooting in the first half and rallied from a 13-point deficit in a Big Ten game at Minneapolis.

Eric Anderson and Calbert Cheaney scored 22 points each for Indiana, which won its fourth consecutive game to remain tied with Ohio State for the conference lead.

Minnesota (10-9, 3-6) was called for 32 fouls, compared to 18 for Indiana. The Hoosiers were 42 of 51 from the foul line, Minnesota nine of 14.

Kevin Lynch scored 20 points, giving him 1,195 in his career and moving him into 15th place on Minnesota’s all-time list.

No. 10 Kentucky 96, Georgia 84--Jamal Mashburn set a record for a Kentucky freshman with 31 points to lead the Wildcats (17-3, 9-1) past the Bulldogs (11-8, 4-6) in a Southeastern Conference game at Lexington, Ky.

Mashburn, a 6-foot-8 forward from New York, scored 17 points in the first half as Kentucky built a 50-38 lead and then hit a key basket in the second half to turn back a rally by Georgia.

Mashburn, breaking Rick Robey’s scoring mark of 28 points in 1975, hit 12 of 15 shots, grabbed eight rebounds, blocked four shots and had six steals. He also had seven turnovers.

DePaul 72, No. 18 Georgetown 63--David Booth scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as the Blue Demons (12-7) snapped a six-year losing streak against the Hoyas (13-6) in a game played at Landover, Md.

It was DePaul’s first victory in five trips to the Capital Centre, and Joey Meyer’s first coaching triumph in seven meetings against John Thompson.

The Blue Demons took control by outscoring Georgetown, 24-7, over the first 10 minutes of the second half, including a 10-0 run that gave them a 48-37 lead.

North Carolina State 79, No. 23 Georgia Tech 73--Rodney Monroe scored 31 points at Atlanta, including eight in the final 3:03, as the Wolfpack (11-6, 4-3) beat the Yellow Jackets (13-7, 5-4) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game for the second time this season.

Monroe’s late scoring came after the Wolfpack had blown all but three points of a 15-point lead they held with eight minutes remaining.

Kenny Anderson led Tech with 23 points and Malcolm Mackey added 21. Tom Gugliotta had 16 for the Wolfpack.

Rafer Giles scored 24 points, including five three-pointers, as Massachusetts (14-6) beat Boston University (7-13), 82-65, at Amherst, Mass. . . . Sonni Holland scored 21 points and Ellis McKennie had 19 as George Washington (13-7, 7-5) beat Penn State (13-7, 6-5), 83-70, in an Atlantic 10 game at Washington, D.C.

SOUTHWEST

Joey Wright scored 22 points, half of them at the foul line, as Texas (14-5, 8-1) beat Texas A&M; (5-15, 0-9), 83-74, in a Southwest Conference game at College Station, Tex.

Keith Balzer put San Diego State (9-10, 4-5 in the Western Athletic Conference) ahead with a 15-foot bank shot with 50 seconds left in the second overtime at San Diego and the Aztecs blocked two Wyoming (15-5, 5-3) shots to secure a 87-84 victory.
