Big East Will Announce 8-Team Football League
The Big East Conference will announce the formation of a new eight-team league that will bring together Big East members Syracuse, Boston College, Pittsburgh and Miami with football independents Rutgers, Temple, West Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Final details were cleared with athletic directors at a league meeting last week and the announcement is set for Tuesday.
“There are absolutely no surprises,” Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese said Sunday. “It will be exactly what you are hearing.”
Tranghese said the Big East football league would start play beginning with the 1991 season. He has said the new schools would play only as football members.
