TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Teams With Agassi in San Francisco Tournament

Share

In one of the unlikeliest doubles teams of the year, John McEnroe and Andre Agassi entered the Volvo/San Francisco tournament as a truly wild-card doubles entry, and in a first-round match Monday night, they played third-seeded Neil Broad and Kevin Curren.

McEnroe and Agassi were not seeded, because neither played many doubles matches last year. Agassi, who was 1-1, is ranked No. 524 in doubles, and McEnroe, who was 2-3 in 1990, is ranked No. 343.

McEnroe has won eight Grand Slam doubles titles, but the last time he had played with a partner was last fall when he and Mark Woodforde lost in the first round of the U.S. Open as defending champions. Agassi’s last previous doubles match was with partner Martin Blackmon, last year at tournament.
