COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Johnson Strikes Out Nine for Fullerton

Chris Johnson’s pitching and hitting helped Fullerton defeat San Bernardino, 4-0, in the first round of the Apache baseball tournament Thursday at Southwestern College.

Johnson (2-0) pitched a complete game, struck out nine, walked two and allowed five hits for Fullerton (5-1). Johnson also had three hits, including a home run to follow Tommy Wilson’s bases-empty home run in the first inning.

In another Apache tournament game:

L.A. Harbor 8, Rancho Santiago 3--Steve Grack went three for five and had one run batted in for Rancho Santiago (3-1), which played at San Diego Mesa College.

Orange Coast 2, Southwestern 2 (12 innings)--John Arnold drove in the tying run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly for Orange Coast (4-0-1) in a game called because of darkness. Southwestern advances to the winner’s bracket on total bases. For Orange Coast, Dan Hernandez and Mike Monday each had three hits.

In the College of the Desert baseball tournament:

Saddleback 11, Grossmont 7--Ryan Relph and Buster Nietzke each drove in two runs to pace Saddleback (2-1) in a first-round game. Relph’s two-run single in the seventh put Saddleback ahead to stay at 5-4.

In the Mt. San Antonio four-way men’s golf match:

Orange Coast wins--At El Prado Country Club in Chino, Ken Calvert of Orange Coast shot a one-under-par 71 to take medalist honors and lead the Pirates (373) over Golden West (397), Cerritos (408) and Mt. San Antonio (423).
