A 17-year-old boy led police on a high-speed chase Friday in Southeast San Diego before losing control of his car and flipping over in a ditch, seriously injuring himself, police said.

The youth, whose name was not released because of his age, was flown to Mercy Hospital in critical condition with multiple head fractures, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Patrol officers became suspicious when they saw a Datsun 280 ZX with commercial license plates--usually reserved for trucks and utility vehicles--about 3 p.m., Robinson said.

When the officers tried to stop the car in the 6100 block of Akins Avenue, the driver sped away, Robinson said.

The driver ran a stop sign, swerved to avoid another car and hit a curb, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The car crashed through a chain-link fence and flipped over into a drainage ditch.

The teen-ager was pinned under the car, which turned out to be stolen, Robinson said. Police were questioning a passenger who tried to run from the wreck.
