MOORPARK : Decorations to Show Support for Troops

Share

Moorpark will spend almost $800 to decorate the city’s light poles with flags and yellow ribbons in support of the Persian Gulf War and those fighting it.

City workers and an anticipated 50 to 100 volunteers will tape yards of ribbon and plastic flags to 1,500 light poles throughout the city by the end of the month. The decorations will stay in place as long as U.S. troops remain in the Gulf or until July, at which time the City Council will reassess the program.

The council on Wednesday appropriated $2,000 of the city’s surplus funds to purchase the decorations, but the staff expects to use less than half that amount.

“This is the time we need to rise to the occasion,” said Mayor Paul Lawrason, who has been honoring the troops with a moment of silence before each city meeting. “You need, in a time like this, to move together.”
