MISSION VIEJO : College District Hit by Big Lottery Loss

Share

The Saddleback Community College District announced this week that it will receive $428,275 less in California Lottery revenues this year than expected.

The district said it now expects to receive only $1.89 million instead of $2.32 million, a decrease of 18%. The California Lottery Commission had previously announced that because of decreased ticket sales, it would be giving community colleges $125 per full-time student this year instead of $154.

Saddleback Community College District, which consists of Saddleback and Irvine Valley colleges, has an annual budget of $58 million.

The money will be taken out of the district’s reserve account and will not affect any programs, district officials said. About $2 million remains in the account, which is money the district keeps available for an emergency.

The state Lottery Commission has blamed higher gasoline prices and the worsening economy for its slumping sales.

It now expects to provide California’s schools with $800 million during the 1990-91 fiscal year, down from $1.35 billion in 1988-89 and from $929 million in 1989-90. By law, about 40% of lottery revenue goes to education.
