Cool Charm Girl Easy Winner in Opener at Los Alamitos

Cool Charm Girl, who concluded the 1990 Los Alamitos meet as the dominant female pacer, opened the 1991 harness season on a similar note Friday night.

Driver Tim Maier took the 8-year-old New Zealand bred mare to the front shortly after the start of the $7,000 Invitational handicap pace for fillies and mares and was never seriously challenged. Cool Charm Girl covered the mile in 1:56 4/5 and paid $3.60 to win as the prohibitive favorite. Doodlin finished second, two lengths behind, with Eastern invader Dime A Dip third, another two lengths back, in the six-horse field.

“She kind of geared down at the wire and I had to slap her, but it was her first race in some time,” Maier said.
