Long Beach Man Beaten to Death

Share

A Long Beach man was beaten to death while neighbors looked on, and one of the neighbors was able to provide information that led to the arrest of two Lynwood brothers Saturday, police said.

Manny Meralovitz, 56, was attacked outside his apartment in the Belmont Shore area on the 200 block of Kennebec Avenue about 10:05 p.m. Friday. Witnesses told police they watched as three men beat and kicked the man and then ran off with what appeared to be his wallet.

One of the neighbors memorized the license plate number of the suspects’ car as it drove away, said Lt. Jack Starbird. The car was traced to Lynwood, where police conducted a four-hour stakeout before storming a residence and arresting Edward Edinbyrd, 25, and his 28-year-old brother, Rodney, Starbird said.

The Edinbyrd brothers were being held without bail at Long Beach jail on suspicion of murder and robbery. A third suspect is being sought.

Police were looking into reports that Meralovitz was the host of a Long Beach cable television talk show, but they had no indication that the killing was related to the victim’s on-air activities.
