COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Sweeps Pair From Cal Poly Pomona

Cal State Fullerton, the fourth-ranked softball team in the nation, won a doubleheader from Cal Poly Pomona in the season-opener for both teams Sunday at Fullerton.

The Titans won the first game, 3-2, with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Fullerton won the second game, 7-1.

Fullerton scored two runs in the third but Pomona came back with two in the fifth in the first game.

The Titans scored the game-winner on a sacrifice fly by Joy Tiner with the bases loaded and no outs. Pinch-hitter Charlotte Wiley opened the seventh with a single. Karla Clark followed with another single, and the two executed a double steal.

Mich DeBree was walked intentionally, bringing up Tiner.

Tiffany Boyd, a sophomore transfer from UCLA, picked up the victory. She allowed two hits, two unearned runs and struck out six in seven innings.

In the second game, Ann Van Dortrecht pitched four innings for the victory and Miho Sasamoto pitched the final three for the save.

Wiley, Clark, DeBree and Yvette Hernandez each had two hits for Fullerton, which had 13.

In nonconference baseball:

UC Riverside 5, UC Irvine 3--Riverside (4-3-1) rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth for the victory. Riverside had two on with two outs when Mark Saugstad looped a single to right to score two runs. Steve Bishop singled to put runners on first and second, and Irvine pitcher Jon Rust was replaced by Mike Rood.

Rood allowed a two-run triple to Chad Townsend that put Riverside ahead, 5-3. Irvine had the tying runs on base in the ninth, but Joe Furukawa flied out to deep center to end the game.

Mike Goodcase had three hits for Irvine (4-5).

In Pacific 10 wrestling:

Fresno State 23, Cal State Fullerton 11--Lyndon Campbell (134 pounds) won, 7-4, and David Jones (heavyweight) won, 18-6, for host Fullerton. Campbell improves to 31-7, and Jones is 33-4.

In women’s tennis:

Washington 5, UC Irvine 4--Andra Pollock came back from a 4-1 deficit in the final set to defeat Irvine’s Jennifer Mazgedian, 7-5, and clinch the match for the host Huskies. They had split the first two sets, 6-4, 4-6.

Buijana Koric won, 7-6, 7-5; Ali Yoshimoto won 7-5, 6-4, and Maggie Powers won, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1, in singles for Irvine.

Kelly Goldsborough and Quynh Le won, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6, in doubles for the Anteaters.
