Coast Guard Searches for Survivors of Sinking Ship

Share

The U.S. Coast Guard searched the waters off Southern California Monday afternoon and evening in response to a Mayday distress call reporting that survivors of a possible ship fire and sinking had taken to a 12-foot inflatable rubber boat.

Long Beach Duty Officer Lt. Bret White said the signal--presumably from a hand-held radio--was “weak and shaky,” and listeners did not get a position, name of a vessel or details of what may have happened.

By “swinging an arc” from where the Mayday call was heard, the Coast Guard concentrated its search by helicopters from Los Angeles and a jet plane from San Diego on a section of coast from Dana Point to San Diego, White said.
