The San Diego Padres have designated right-handed pitcher Matt Maysey for assignment to reduce the roster to the 40-man limit, Padres’ General Manager Joe McIlvaine announced.
The addition of free-agent third baseman Jim Presley and outfielder Jim Vatcher, claimed on waivers from Atlanta over the weekend, put the Padres one over the limit.
As of Monday, the Padres had 10 days to do one of four things. Maysey could be traded, become a free agent, claimed on waivers or be assigned to the minors.
Maysey, 24, had a 6-10 record and a 5.58 ERA in 26 games with Las Vegas last season, his sixth in the Padre farm system.
The Padres also announced that left-handed pitcher Atlee Hammaker sustained a hairline fracture to his pitching hand Feb. 7 during a weight-lifting accident.
The cast is scheduled to be removed Feb. 27.
