Two people were killed when their car careened off the Antelope Valley Freeway and struck two cars after landing on a Lancaster street, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said Tuesday.

The names of the dead--a 43-year-old man and 47-year-old woman--were not released. Two men in separate cars received minor injuries when their vehicles were struck by the car that plunged off the freeway.

Officer Don Coats said investigators do not know yet what caused the accident. The 1987 Ford Escort was traveling south at 7:20 p.m. Monday when it jumped the guardrail where the freeway passes over Avenue J in Lancaster.

“For some reason, this person just flew off the freeway and went airborne, flipped, and struck the center median,” Coats said. It struck two cars traveling east on Avenue J before coming to rest.

Xeujun Kuang, 19, of Lancaster, the driver of one of the cars struck by the Escort, was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The second car hit was driven by Gary Sherer, 25, of Lancaster, who was treated at the scene.
