Germany’s Christian Saceanu, ranked 153rd in the world, upset third-seeded Andre Agassi, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), Wednesday in the first round of the Donnay Indoor tennis championships at Brussels.

Saceanu displayed the aggressiveness and power that Agassi lacked to score the biggest upset of his career.

Agassi, ranked fourth in the world, looked sullen throughout the first-round match, and nonchalance appeared to cost him several points.

Boris Becker, top-seeded and playing to hold on to his No. 1 world ranking, beat Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in another first-round match. Second-seeded Stefan Edberg, seventh-seeded Michael Chang and Frenchman Guy Forget, seeded fourth, easily advanced to the third round with straight-set victories.

Edberg defeated Swedish countryman Magnus Gustafsson, 6-0, 6-4; Chang swept past France’s Arnaud Boetsch, 6-3, 6-2, and Forget trounced Belgian Eduardo Masso, 6-1, 6-2.

Mats Wilander also won his opening match, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), over Italian Omar Camporese.

Becker had to save two break points to avoid going 3-0 down in the deciding set before his experience carried him through.

“I escaped with a bit of luck against Volkov. I know what he’s capable of doing,” Becker said of the Soviet, who is ranked 19th in the world.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated Guillaume Raoux of France, 6-1, 7-5, in the $1-million U.S. Pro Indoor tournament at Philadelphia.

After winning the first game of the match and then losing six in a row, Raoux made Lendl work to win in straight sets and advance to the third round.
