From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Mechanical problems on Santa Clara County buses have become so prevalent that officials have had to cancel runs and partial runs almost daily. The problem has grown worse in the past two or three months as the transit district struggles to keep its 516-bus fleet on the road, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News. Half of the vehicles are at least 10 years old. In recent months, the district has averaged 92 buses a day out of service. Transit spokeswoman Deborah Wetter said the district’s aging fleet is to blame.
