Indiana Coach Bob Knight thought he had all the angles covered, but he didn’t have an answer for the shooting of Ohio State’s Treg Lee.

Lee, who tied the score in the first overtime, scored with four seconds left in the second extra period Sunday as No. 2 Ohio State turned back No. 4 Indiana, 97-95, in a Big Ten showdown at Columbus, Ohio.

Lee’s 10-foot baseline jump shot was a duplicate of the shot that tied the score in the first overtime. It enabled the Buckeyes to take over sole possession of first place in the conference.

Jim Jackson scored a career-high 30 points for Ohio State (22-1, 12-1), including the basket that tied the score at the end of regulation play.

Indiana (22-3, 10-2) was led by a career-high 32 points from freshman Damon Bailey.

“I loved Damon Bailey today,” Ohio State Coach Randy Ayers said. “For a freshman, he showed why he’s a winner.”

“Two teams played well today,” Indiana Coach Bob Knight said. “When that happens, both teams should have a chance to win at the end.”

The game had 24 lead changes, 22 ties and neither team led by more than six points.

Indiana, whose six-game winning streak ended, got 26 points from Calbert Cheaney before he fouled out.

Jackson, with the court spread, drove into the middle. But under pressure, he passed to Lee, who arched his shot over Eric Anderson with four seconds left. After two timeouts, Pat Graham’s off-balance shot from 40 feet was long.

“That play at the end of the second overtime was designed for me,” Jackson said. “I got double-teamed and Treg made a smart move and cut back door. I saw him and hit him.”

Said Lee: “Jackson made the penetration and I felt Damon Bailey went out to double-team him and I made eye contact. I went to the baseline and got the ball and shot a short jumper.”

The shot was perfect, extending Ohio State’s winning streak to five and giving the Buckeyes their second season sweep of the Hoosiers since Knight took over at Indiana in 1972.

“The key was we didn’t get the kind of help on Jim Jackson that we needed at the end of the game,” Knight said.

No. 20 Louisiana State 88, Alabama 81--Shaquille O’Neal had 36 points and 19 rebounds and blocked seven shots at Baton Rouge, La., as the Tigers (17-7, 10-4) moved into a tie with Alabama (16-7, 10-4) in the Southeastern Conference.

LSU made only three of 13 free throws in the first half, with Vernel Singleton, an 81% free-throw shooter, missing all three of his attempts. Then the Tigers opened the second half missing their first three.

Harold Boudreaux had 15 and T.J. Pugh had 12 points for LSU.

James Robinson led Alabama with 25 points, and his teammate at guard, Gary Waites, had 19. Melvin Cheatum had 18 points and Webb had 11.

The Longhorns, who fell to 17-6 for the season and 11-2 in Southwest Conference games, took their biggest lead at 61-56 with 9:50 to play, but Houston regained the lead for good at 63-62 on a three-point basket by Smith with 7:30 to play.

Locksley Collie led the Longhorns with 24 points and Joey Wright added 22, but had to sit out part of the second half with four fouls.
