Becker, Resting Hamstring, Out a Month
Boris Becker, who defaulted from the semifinals of a tournament in Brussels Saturday because of a hamstring injury, will take a month off, his manager, Ion Tiriac, said Monday.
Becker had been scheduled to play in a $1-million tournament in Stuttgart, Germany, this week.
“His body has run out gas,” said Tiriac, who blamed an extensive schedule that included Davis Cup matches for the injury.
Becker earned the No. 1 world ranking for the first time in his career after winning the Australian Open in January. But he held it only 20 days before having to pull out at Brussels.
Stefan Edberg, who will play in Stuttgart, regained the top spot in the ATP computer rankings even though he lost in the semifinals at Brussels to Guy Forget, who won that tournament.
In Brussels, Becker criticized the ATP for forcing him into too many events in order to protect his ranking.
Edberg has entered the Volvo Los Angeles tournament, to be played July 27-Aug. 4 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center at UCLA.
