Chris Perry of Cal State Northridge, the 1990 NCAA Division II champion in the men’s long jump, is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday.

Perry, who set a Northridge record of 25 feet 10 1/4 inches in the long jump as a freshman last season, injured his left knee Saturday in the Northern Arizona Invitational.

Don Strametz, Northridge’s track and field coach, said that Perry suffered the injury on his fourth attempt in the long jump after finishing first in a heat of the 55-meter dash earlier in the meet.

“He said he just felt something give,” Strametz said. “We won’t know what it is until they get in there Friday and take a look.”

If the injury sidelines Perry for several weeks, he could redshirt this season. Last weekend’s meet marked the official start of this season.

If an athlete competes in 25% or less of the regularly scheduled meets and petitions for a redshirt season by midseason, he or she can redshirt.

The loss of Perry would be a major blow to the Northridge men’s team. In addition to competing in the long and triple jump, Perry was expected to be a member of the 4 x 100-meter relay.

“It’ll be a big loss if we lose him,” Strametz said. “But the other guys are just going to have to pick it up.”
