San Gabriel : City Backs Unified Schools

Share

The San Gabriel City Council unanimously approved a non-binding resolution last week in support of efforts to form a unified school district for San Gabriel.

A unified school district would allow area students to remain in the same school system from kindergarten through 12th grade. Currently, most city students begin schooling in the San Gabriel School District, which has no high school. Students then continue in the Alhambra High School District.

The San Gabriel district will formally propose unification on March 6 to the Los Angeles County Committee on School Board Organization, said Roy Seltzer, a parent organizer of the unification movement. Public hearings will follow.

The Alhambra district didn’t block the filing of the transfer petition, but opposes changes that would cost it students and the state funding that comes with them, Alhambra Supt. Bruce Peppin said.
