World IN BRIEF : SPAIN : Chess Champ Loses Tournament Game

World chess champion Garry Kasparov lost the first game of the chess tournament in Linares, Spain, to Vasili Ivanchuk, a rising Soviet player, in 38 moves. It was Kasparov’s first defeat outside world championship play since he lost to Boris Gulko of the United States last year at Linares.
