Kieishsha Garnes game-high 33 points weren’t enough to overcome Creighton in SDSU’s 82-76 Western Athletic Conference loss at Peterson Gym.
Also in double figures for the Aztecs (14-11, 6-4) were Carmelia Bloodsaw (13) and Tameka McGlawn (11). Shannon Sturby and Kathy Halligan led Creighton (21-5, 11-1) with 34 and 22 points, respectively.
TENNIS
The Aztecs cruised to a 5-1 victory over host Air Force in a men’s Western Athletic Conference meeting. No. 1 Joe McDonough polished off Dan Oosterhous, 7-5, 6-2, and No. 2 Ricardo Hererra handled Ron Ross, 6-2, 6-4 for SDSU (4-2, 2-0). Air Force fell to 5-2, 1-1.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
UC San Diego defeated visiting UC Santa Cruz, 17-15, 11-15, 16-17, 15-11 and 15-12 in a Pacific Coast Volleyball Conference game. UCSD (5-7) was led by Gerry Goldstein’s 29 kills and Brent Couture’s 23 kills.
TRACK AND FIELD
SDSU senior Darla Vaughn’s victories in the 200- and 55-meter dashes and the 55-meter hurdles earned her outstanding female athlete honors at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships in Colorado Springs. The three first-place finishes for Vaughn of Mira Mesa High were the only victories for the Aztec women, who finished second to champion Brigham Young with 56 3/4 points.
Darren Houston’s victory in the 200-meter dash was the lone bright spot for the SDSU men, who placed seventh with 22 points. BYU won the meet with 195 points.
Anna Mark was a triple-winner and Vanessa Couch a double winner for the Point Loma Nazarene women in a 67-63 victory over host Azusa Pacific. Mark won the triple jump at 35-10, the long jump at 17-0 and the 100-meter hurdles at 16.67. Couch won the 800- and 3000- meter runs in 2:23.68 and 10:34.
Robert Keter was a double-winner in the 800 and 1500 meters for the PLNC men.
