Abandon Travel Phobia

Share

I was amused by the British press regarding the “wimpish” attitude of Americans toward travel in Europe (“Europeans Calling American Travelers ‘Wimps’ ,” Feb. 10). I have to agree that this current hysteria is exaggerated and foolish.

The Wall Street Journal defends Americans, saying that by not traveling they are sparing themselves anxiety. The point is, isn’t their anxiety based on the scare-mongering tactics of Suddam Hussein (backed by the current media exposure) rather than on the real facts?

Last year, 22,500 people were killed by drunk drivers in this country. This equates to nearly 50 jumbo jets full of passengers. Maybe Americans should stop driving? Even more deaths are caused in the home.

Statistically, therefore, one would stand less chance of meeting one’s demise at the hands of terrorists in Europe than by spending one’s vacation at home and driving to the beach every day.

Let us get a true perspective on this situation and stop living as captives to illogical and frenetic phobias.
