San Jose State Stops CSUN, 3-2

San Jose State trimmed visiting Cal State Northridge, 3-2, Sunday to snap the Matadors’ seven-game winning streak in baseball.

With Matadors runners on first and third in the ninth inning, Andy Hodgins hit into a double play to end the game.

Northridge coaches disputed Dave Nicewenger’s call at first base. Coach Bill Kernen said Hodgins was “at least five feet” past first base. Assistant Jody Robinson said that when he argued the call, another umpire intervened and swung a safety mask at him, cutting him.

Leroy Hugh, a San Jose State trainer, said he did not see what happened, but that trainers treated Robinson for an ear cut.

Scott Sharts put Northridge (13-5) ahead, 1-0, in the fourth with his 11th home run of the season. But San Jose State (5-8) took the lead for good in the fifth by scoring three runs off Craig Clayton (2-2).
