Suspect Held in Robbery of Bank; 3rd Holdup in 2 Weeks
A man was arrested Wednesday after a bank was robbed in what police said was the third unrelated holdup of the branch in two weeks.
The latest robbery occurred Wednesday about 9:30 a.m. at the Wells Fargo Bank branch at 3400 Bristol St. Police said a man wearing a ski mask walked in, brandished a handgun and took an undisclosed amount of money from several tellers. As the robber drove off, a bank employee was able to take down part of the getaway car’s license plate number.
A Tustin police officer spotted a suspect about 15 minutes later and arrested him without incident. The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was being held on suspicion of bank robbery. A weapon and money were recovered, police said.
The bank was robbed Tuesday by a man who escaped by bicycle with an undisclosed amount of cash. The bank also was robbed Feb. 16.
Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Tom Boylan said the robberies did not appear to be related.
The bank was closed most of the day Wednesday as the FBI and Costa Mesa police interviewed witnesses. Bank employees would not comment.
