Jeremy Roenick scored twice during the second period Friday night at Buffalo and the Chicago Blackhawks ended their road slump with a 5-3 victory over the Sabres.

The Blackhawks had been in a 0-4-1 road slump. The Blackhawks, who will have six of their last 11 games at home, trail St. Louis in the Norris Division by two points.

Roenick, who has a career-high 36 goals, scored three minutes apart to help the Blackhawks open a 5-1 lead.

The first Buffalo goal was by Dale Hawerchuk and it made him the 31st player to reach 1,000 points in the NHL.

Czech rookie Dominik Hasek made 29 saves in his second game with the Blackhawks for his first victory.

Hasek was brought up from the minors because No. 1 goalie Ed Belfour has a hamstring injury.

“He gave us a chance to win on the road,” Chicago Coach Mike Keenan said. “You can’t ask for more.”

Edmonton 5, Philadelphia 4--The Oilers welcomed back their leader, Mark Messier, by rallying from a 2-0 deficit at Edmonton to beat the Flyers.

Messier, last year’s most valuable player, has missed 27 games.

Messier assisted on Petr Klima’s 34th goal, which capped a four-goal second period rally for the Oilers.
