A 19-year-old driver was apparently drunk when his car slammed into a disabled auto in Encinitas early Sunday, killing two people in the stopped car, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 just south of La Costa Avenue.

Killed were Hugo Estrada, 21, and Delfina Cabrales, 68, both of the Oxnard area, a spokesman for the county medical examiner’s office said.

The driver of the disabled car had apparently left to seek assistance, the CHP said.

The CHP identified the driver of car that hit the car parked on the shoulder of the freeway as Chad Adams of Orange County. He was in serious condition Sunday at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, a nursing supervisor said.

The CHP said Adams will be held on suspicion of drunken driving. Adams was driving about 60 m.p.h. at the time of the crash, the CHP said.

In critical condition at Scripps was Gina Cameron, 18, of Anaheim, who was a passenger in Adams’ car, the CHP said.
