COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nevin’s Four Hits Help Carry Titans Past Portland, 16-7

Phil Nevin had four hits and Craig Fairbrother and Frank Herman hit home runs as Cal State Fullerton defeated Portland, 16-7, in a nonconference baseball game Sunday at Amerige Park in Fullerton.

Nevin had two runs batted in, scored twice and stole two bases for Fullerton (11-11). Fairbrother drove in five runs, including three with a home run in the seventh.

Fullerton got seven runs in the eighth on a two-run double by Matt Hattabaugh, a two-run triple by Frank Herman, a two-run single by Fairbrother and the other run scored on an error.

Trevor Rush had a double and two singles for Fullerton.

In another nonconference game:

UC Irvine 12, San Diego State 9--Craig Plumley hit a two-out, three-run double in the ninth to break a 9-9 tie for visiting Irvine (11-12). Steve May (3-1) pitched the last four innings, allowing no runs, for the victory. May was the only pitcher of 12 used not to walk a batter.

Eight SDSU pitchers combined to walk 12, six of whom scored. Irvine’s first three pitchers walked eight, with seven scoring.

Matt Filson had a three-run home run in the first for Irvine. San Diego State is 12-7.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, Chapman 1--Chapman’s Jon Graves allowed eight hits in nine innings but the Panthers (8-14, 4-5 in conference) made three errors leading to three unearned runs in the loss at Hart Park in Orange. San Luis Obispo is 11-10, 5-4.

In Big West Conference softball:

Fresno State 4-5, Cal State Fullerton 1-0--Terry Carpenter pitched a one-hitter in the first game and Marcie Green allowed four in the second for host Fresno State (17-1, 6-0). Fullerton is 18-7, 2-2.

In Rebel Spring Games softball play:

Chapman 2, American International (Mass.) 0--Cheri Schreck (7-2) pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight for the Panthers in Winter Garden, Fla.

Chapman 2, California (Pa.) 0--Blake (9-0) struck out 11 and allowed four hits for Chapman (16-2).
