Two Marks From Mark Help PLNC to Title

Anna Mark, a freshman exchange student from Sweden, put Point Loma Nazarene College--and herself--into the record books by setting two meet records at the Golden State Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships on Saturday. PLNC won the women’s title with 134 points, five more than host Azusa Pacific.

Mark’s record in the women’s long jump of 17 feet 3 inches bettered the 1989 record of 16-11 3/4 by Azusa Pacific’s Kim Cockrell. Mark then had a triple jump of 36-4 1/4 to break the former mark of 35-10 1/4, set in 1989 by PLNC’s Kris Young.

Mark also finished second in the 100 hurdles and took second in the 400 hurdles. Teammate Alicia Harasty, second to Mark in the triple jump, won the 100 meter hurdles and was second in the javelin.

PLNC and Azusa Pacific were tied at 123 entering the final event, but PLNC picked up 11 points with a second, third and fifth-place finish, respectively, from Monica DeKoster, Mary Guinan and Suzanne Kerns. Azusa Pacific got six points in the shot put for winning the event.

The PLNC men finished second to Azusa Pacific. Christian Andreasson won the javelin and took second in the long jump and triple jump, third in the high jump and fourth in the shot put.

SWIMMING

Kenyon (Ohio) won its eighth consecutive NCAA Division III Championship in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday, beating second-place UC San Diego, 661 1/2-466. The schools also finished 1-2 last year.

UCSD’s Catherine Capriles, last year’s swimmer of the meet, won for the third time in the meet, winning the 200-yard backstroke in 2 minutes 4.43 seconds. Capriles finished the meet with three first-place finishes--one in a relay--two seconds and a third. Kenyon’s Kateri Mathews, whose wins included the 100 and 200 freestyle events, was named the meet’s top swimmer.

Sabrina Lum won the 200 butterfly in 2:06.40. UCSD had four of the top 16 finishers in the event.

Capriles, Christy Parker, Jocelyn Rothbard and Jamee Couch ttook second in the 400 freestyle relay, and Erin Bakey took third in the 200 breaststroke.

BASEBALL

San Diego State (14-7) swept a doubleheader from UNLV (9-10), winning the first game, 15-4, and the second, 6-5.

The Aztecs sent 17 batters to the plate in the fifth inning of the first game and scored 12 runs. Brad Gennaro did the most damage, knocking in three runs on a double and then knocking in another on a single later in the inning. Gennaro went four for five and scored four times in Game 1.

In the second game, SDSU won in the 10th on an RBI single by Bill Dunckel.

UCSD swept a Division III doubleheader at LaVerne, winning the first game, 6-1, and the second, 4-2.

Steve Wrenn, a Poway graduate, went three for three with two RBIs in the first game and Steve Nowlan, an El Capitan graduate, was two for three. UCSD’s Erikk Aldridge was two for four with three RBIs in the first game and two for four with one RBI and a home run in the second.

Two UCSD pitchers, Bryan Thomason (1-3) and Brent Hansen, combined to allow no earned runs in Game 2.

UCSD (7-11) has won three out of its last four. LaVerne is 11-9.

USIU (6-18) split a doubleheader against visiting UCLA, winning the first game, 4-2, and losing the second, 8-7.

USIU’s Ed Crabtree went two for four with a home run and Jeff Matranga (3-5) struck out nine to pick up the victory in Game 1.

UCLA is 14-10.

Point Loma Nazarene dropped a doubleheader to visiting Azusa Pacific, losing the first game, 5-4, and the second, 9-1. Rich Miller hit a solo home run for Point Loma in the first game.

Point Loma is 10-13 and 0-5 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Azusa Pacific is 14-3, 5-0.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

California won the top three singles matches and upset 15th-ranked USD, 5-4. Only Laura Richards and Kara Brady, two freshmen, won in singles. Tonya Fuller, ranked 11th nationally, and Tuck Kacharoen, ranked 24th, both lost in three sets. Fuller fell 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 to Lisa Albano, Kacharoen lost 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Emilie Viqueira.

USD dropped to 6-7 while Cal improved to 10-6.

MEN’S TENNIS

PLNC remained unbeaten in the GSAC with a 7-2 victory over previously unbeaten Azusa Pacific. PLNC clinched the decision by winning five of the six singles matches, getting victories from Mattias Bendefores, Sean Willette, Andrew Patton, John Norton and Alvara Macholi. PLNC is 7-3, 5-0.

USD moved into the finals of the San Diego Invitational by scoring a 7-0 victory over Yale. The Toreros face Iowa at 2 p.m. in the championship. Iowa was a 5-3 winner against Drake. In No. 1 singles, USD’s Jose Luis Noriega defeated Rick Theobald, 6-3, 6-2.

CREW

UC San Diego won three of five races on Mission Bay against Loyola Marymount, and USD won two of four against USC as the San Diego schools faced Los Angeles clubs. UCSD won the men’s varsity 8, men’s freshman 8 and the women’s novice 8. USD won the men’s varsity 4 and the women’s novice 8.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

SDSU (13-3, 7-2) defeated BYU, 15-6, 15-11, 16-14 at Peterson Gym. Mike Mattarocci led the Aztecs with 19 kills, Mike Schlegel added 15.

BYU is 1-20, 0-10.
