A motorist died early Monday after a gunfight on a North Hollywood street with another driver, who was with a woman believed to be the victim’s ex-girlfriend, Los Angeles police said.

Wadell Cobb, 21, of North Hollywood was found about 7:45 p.m. Sunday slumped over the steering wheel of his car on the northeast corner of Chandler Boulevard and Corteen Place, minutes after he was shot several times by another driver, Detective Mike Coffey said.

Witnesses told police that Cobb was driving north on Corteen when the gunfight erupted between him and the driver of the other car. Coffey said the two men fired several shots at each other from handguns. Cobb was hit several times in the chest and lost control of his car, which jumped a curb before stopping. The other driver sped off. Cobb was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he died at 1:20 a.m. Monday.

Coffey said it was unclear how the fight began, but said witnesses identified a woman in the other car as Cobb’s former girlfriend.
