Rescue crews scoured the waters off the Long Beach Naval Station Tuesday after reports that a small plane may have gone down, but found no signs of a crash.

The U.S. Coast Guard called the search off after rescue teams from a number of government agencies searched portions of San Pedro Bay for more than an hour. “Nobody sighted any debris or sign of distress,” said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Reid Crispino. He added that the Federal Aviation Administration had no reports of missing aircraft.

Authorities started the search about 10:30 a.m. after two Navy petty officers at the naval station reported that a small plane seemed to be hovering about 500 feet above the water and then disappeared. The two noticed the plane as they were driving near the shore.
