TRACK ROUNDUP : Saddleback Boys Sprint to Easy Victory

The sprints and hurdles highlighted Saddleback’s 89-47 victory over Woodbridge in a Sea View League boys’ track and field meet Thursday at Woodbridge.

Jarrett Murrell of Saddleback won the 100 in 10.5 seconds and the 200 in 22.0. Saddleback won the 400-meter relay in 43.6.

Greg Muniz of Woodbridge won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 40.6 and came back to finish second in the 200 in 22.5.

In an Empire League boys’ meet:

Esperanza 94, Los Alamitos 35--Mark Parlin of Esperanza was a double winner in the Aztecs’ victory, winning the shotput with a personal-best throw of 64 feet 5 1/2 inches and the discus with a throw of 175-6. Teammate Mike Burns was second in the shotput with a throw of 51-5 1/2.

Parlin’s previous best in the shotput was 62-10, set last week. He threw the shot 62-9 in placing second to Brent Noon of Fallbrook, the national leader, in last year’s State meet.

Bill Pendleton, Esperanza assistant coach, said Parlin threw 66-0 in a recent workouts. He said Parlin is pointing for Saturday’s Pasadena Games.

In a South Coast League boys’ meet:

Dana Hills 83, Irvine 53--Dan Niednagel of Dana Hills won the 800 in 2 minutes 1 second and the 1,600 meters in 4:32.0. Irvine’s Mike Pedro won the discus with a throw of 153-4. John Crane of Dana Hills won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 40.0 and was second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.5.

In Sea View League girls’ meets:

University 99, Tustin 28--Tanja Brix of University won the mile with a time of 5:31. In the shotput, University’s Andrea Bill won with a throw of 35-1.

Woodbridge 99, Saddleback 25--Sprinter Mindy Hawley led host Woodbridge to an easy victory. Hawley won the 200 meters in 26.0 and the 400 in 1:01.3. Hawley’s bests last season were 26.7 and 58.6, respectively. Amy Robles defeated Woodbridge teammate Kay Nekota in the 1,600 meters, 5:26.1 to 5:27.9. Earlier, Nekota won the 3,200 meters in 11:41.0.

In a Sunset League boys’ meet:

Huntington Beach 69, Fountain Valley 66--Adrian Brown of Huntington Beach won the 100 meters in 10.9, the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.4 and the long jump with a leap of 21-1 1/2. Last season, Brown ran a county-best of 14.7 at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

In a Sunset League girls’ meet:

Huntington Beach 75, Fountain Valley 52--Jana Davis of Huntington Beach outran Elinor Tolson of Fountain Valley in the 100 meters, 12.4 to 12.5 in the meet’s featured race. Davis also won the 200, running 26.9.

Tolson came back to win the 100- and 300-meter low hurdles in 14.7 and 48.8, respectively. Tolson, a sophomore, has bests of 14.51 for the 100 hurdles and 44.91 for the 300 hurdles. Her 100 hurdles mark was a county best last season. All sprint marks were wind-aided, however.
