Foundation Funds Cancer Studies

Concern Foundation for Cancer Research announced $145,000 in grants at a luncheon honoring Jackie Gottlieb, as she stepped down from her seven-year position as a founding board member. The UCLA School of Medicine will receive $70,000; the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm will receive $75,000. During Gottlieb’s tenure, the foundation has awarded $5.25 million to doctors and scientists worldwide.

* Buckley School’s March 14 Safari Soiree at the Regent Beverly Wilshire was chaired by Quincy Jones and Maxine and Gary Smith. The event, attended by more than 400 parents and friends, netted $72,000 for the scholarship fund.

* Free Romania Foundation has announced the receipt of $29,000 from the KABC-Romanian Children’s Fund. Proceeds will help sponsor medical volunteers and establish a 50-bed model clinic in Romania. Ion Berindei is foundation founder.

* Children’s Cancer Research Fund will receive more than $250,000, net proceeds from the March 3 “Tip-A-King” benefit involving the Los Angeles Kings and Great Earth Vitamin stores. More than 2,200 guests had the opportunity to pose with the players and enjoy games, food, fun and other attractions at the Santa Monica Air Center. Proceeds will fund research in pediatric oncology.

* Academic Booster Club of Westchester High School has received a $5,000 donation from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation to purchase computers.

* Valley Presbyterian Hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit will receive $24,000 raised at the Feb. 13 “Women of Vision” tribute luncheon at the Universal Hilton. The event, attended by 400, was sponsored by Friends of Valley Presbyterian Hospital. Proceeds will increase the patient capacity of the unit from four to 10 beds.

* American Diabetes Assn., Los Angeles chapter, has received $10,000 from Thrifty Corp., leading sponsor of the 1991 Ride and Stride fund-raiser to be held on May 4 on 11 routes in Los Angeles County.

* Easter Seals’ 20th national telethon fund-raiser ended with a net total of more than $43.2 million, with $1.3 million earmarked for Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and counties, among others, to provide programs and services for children and adults with disabilities. The telecast was broadcast live by KTLA-TV.

* Ayres Clinic, a nonprofit occupational therapy center in Torrance, was awarded $15,000 in February by the Jacobs Family Foundation. The grant will launch a program for preschoolers exposed to drugs before birth and fund research for professionals who work with drug-exposed children.
