Why does the uplifting, happy crowd-pleaser always have to beat out the dark and depressing but better-made picture? Whoopi Goldberg for best supporting actress? Steve Martin did a better job of acting nutty in “The Jerk.”
The Oscars no longer pick the best. Better yardsticks are the L.A. critics’ awards and the New York critics’ awards--they do not worry about politics or popularity.
