S.D. State Pounds Hartford

San Diego State’s baseball team scored 10 runs on 12 hits Friday in a 10-1 nonconference runaway over visiting Hartford.

Derek Vinyard singled, doubled and tripled and drove in two runs for the Aztecs (21-7). Also for SDSU, catcher Marcelino Garcia went three for three, including a double, and he had four RBIs. Bill Dunckel picked up three hits, including a triple, scored three runs and had two RBIs for the Aztecs.

Hartford remained winless at 0-9.

U.S. International split a doubleheader with Southern Utah State, losing the first, 6-5, but taking the second, 4-3.

Santana High graduate Darrin Forster drove in a run, scored once and went three for three, including a double and a solo home run in the seventh inning of the winning effort.

For USIU (8-23), freshman John Bretza allowed only four hits in the first game, but all were in the fourth inning and three were home runs.

Southern Utah State is 3-19.

UC San Diego dropped games to Wisconsin Whitewater and Cal Baptist in the opening day of the UCSD Invitational Tournament. In the 2-1 loss to Wisconsin Whitewater, Anthony Sanchez went two for three for UCSD. In the 7-4 loss to Cal Baptist, E.J. Remer was two for three and Sanchez was two for four.

The Tritons fell to 7-14.

Mark Ratekin’s two singles and a double and one RBI helped lift Point Loma Nazarene over visiting St. Mary’s (Minn.), 5-3, in a nonconference game. Teammates Rich Miller and Scott Wylie contributed a double and a single each.

Winner Dion Dice (3-3) gave up one run and one hit, struck out one and walked two for PLNC (13-16). St. Mary’s fell to 3-2.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

La Jolla’s Ditta Huber lived up to her No. 1 seed by winning the girls’ 16 championship of the Easter Bowl tournament in straight sets in Miami.

Huber played an aggressive game to defeat second-seeded Anne Miller of Midland, Mich., 6-4, 6-3, at the Doral Resort & Country Club.

So she can concentrate on the Seventeen Tournament of Champions in early May in Mission Viejo, Huber will bypass next month’s Ojai Tournament, where she reached the finals last year.

The 14th-ranked Toreras won all but one match in straight sets to defeat Washington, 9-0 at USD. Twelefth-ranked Tonya Fuller and 18th-ranked Tuck Kacharoen were 6-2, 6-1 winners in the top two singles spots.

USD improved to 10-8. The Huskies dropped to 11-6.

MEN’S TENNIS

SDSU lost to Mississippi, 5-2, in the 16-team Irvine/Marriott Tournament. The lone Aztec winners were Richard Herrera, who defeated Derrick Brooks, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Kerry Safdie, who defeated Ivan Travino, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

The Aztecs (12-4) will play University of Wisconsin today. Mississippi is 8-2.

SOFTBALL

Errors led to two losses for UCSD in the Cal State Hayward Tournament. A hit and two errors helped Portland State score twice in the third inning for a 2-0 victory over UCSD in the final game of pool play.

Later in elimination play, Stanford topped UCSD, 3-2. The Cardinal scored what proved to be game-winning run on a walk, a sacrifice and two errors in the sixth. UCSD rallied in the seventh, scoring twice when Lynn Moreno singled in Dana Chaiken and Melissa Mazanet, who had pinch-run for Theresa Swickla.
