Los Angeles police on Monday identified the victim of a fatal shooting in a shopping mall parking lot last Friday as Camille Gibbs, 45, of Canoga Park and said the case against her suspected killer is expected to be brought to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office today.

Family members said Gibbs, an insurance claims adjuster working on her college degree, was buying a wedding gift at the Topanga Plaza Mall before she was shot and killed in the mall parking lot about 7:30 p.m.

Dorcas Gibbs, the victim’s stepdaughter, said Gibbs often shopped at the mall and was simply “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“It’s just shocking,” she said.

On Monday, family members remembered Camille Gibbs as a woman who strove for excellence in herself and encouraged the same in others.

Dorcas Gibbs said she and her stepmother often disagreed about education. Camille Gibbs had recently returned to college, and she wanted her stepdaughter to complete her university degree.

Gibbs was scheduled to graduate from Cal State Dominguez Hills in May after attending Saturday classes for two years, Dorcas Gibbs said. Gibbs had wanted to become a drug counselor and planned to continue her education at another university.

According to police, a man approached Gibbs while she was loading purchases from the May Co. into her Corvette and forced her away from the car. She struggled briefly. The man shot her in the head, then took her purse and car, police said.

Police arrested Emelito Halili Exmundo, 28, of Canoga Park several hours later after he was shot during a struggle with the owner of a Chatsworth liquor store that he allegedly attempted to hold up.

Police said Monday that Exmundo was being held without bail in the jail ward of County-USC Medical Center.
