BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT
Free agent designated hitter Brian Downing, trying to earn a spot with the Texas Rangers, sustained a broken bone in his right hand when he was hit by a pitch in an intrasquad game.
Downing, who was picked up Thursday and has not signed a contract, is expected to be out 10 to 14 days. The Angels decided not to offer Downing a contract after the 1990 season.
The Rangers reassigned pitcher Jim Poole to the minor leagues.
The left-hander was 0-1 with a 4.76 earned-run average in four games this spring.
