COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Young Powers UC Irvine to Victory Over San Diego

Brian Young hit a pair of two-run home runs as UC Irvine defeated the University of San Diego, 7-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in San Diego.

Young’s homers came in the fourth and sixth innings, bringing his season total to five. Mike Goodcase had two hits and Al Rodriguez added an RBI double for Irvine (17-17).

David Bladow (3-4) pitched the first six innings for the victory, and Steve May didn’t allow a hit in three innings of relief for his third save.

In other nonconference baseball games:

Pepperdine 4, Cal State Fullerton 3--David Main hit a two-run home run off Bill Fitzgerald in the sixth to give visiting Pepperdine (22-5) a 4-3 lead at Amerige Park in Fullerton. Fitzgerald (3-3) took the loss.

Steve Sisco had three hits, including a home run and a triple, for Fullerton (17-14). He has had three or more hits in six consecutive games, and has a 16-game hitting streak.

Steve Duda pitched two innings to get the victory for Pepperdine. Jerry Aschoff, a junior from Rancho Santiago College, started for Pepperdine, allowing three runs in four innings. Chris Sheff, a sophomore from Laguna Hills High School, had three hits, including a double, and scored a run for Pepperdine.

Southern California College 3, Biola 1--Visiting Southern California (19-12) scored runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Keith Lazlo had two hits and an RBI for SCC.

David Black (6-3) allowed three hits and had three strikeouts in four shutout innings of relief for the victory.

Christ College Irvine 8, Occidental 8 (7 innings, darkness)--Terry Robinson had three hits, scored a run and drove in another for visiting Christ College Irvine (16-9-1). Occidental (4-12-1) scored a run in the seventh to tie it, 8-8.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1-3, Cal State Long Beach 0-1--The fourth-ranked Titans (34-7, 10-2) extended their winning streak to 16 games with the sweep at Lakewood’s Mayfair Park.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

Chapman 5-3, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-1--Sandy Olivas hit her 10th home run of the season, a three-run homer in the first inning of the second game, as host Chapman (29-5, 2-0) swept a doubleheader from Dominguez Hills. Jacki Blake (15-1), who had four hits in the two games, pitched a four-hitter in the second game. In the first game, Cheri Schreck (14-4) allowed three hits and the Panthers scored five runs in the sixth inning.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Christ College Irvine 7-9, Point Loma Nazarene 4-6--Cathy Carroll had four hits and scored twice for host Christ College Irvine (16-12, 2-0).
