A Saugus teen-ager was hospitalized after he was injured in an explosion while trying to make fireworks in his driveway, authorities said Wednesday.

Eric Crawford, 16, and a friend were attempting to make bottle rockets with gunpowder and carbon dioxide cartridges about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday when the experiment exploded, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Mead said.

Crawford’s third finger and a portion of his second finger were blown off in the explosion. He was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital where he was listed in good condition after surgery Tuesday, hospital officials said.
