Golden State Warrior stars Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond escaped injury when debris from an earthquake-damaged freeway shattered the sunroof of Mullin’s pickup truck.

The high-scoring trio was headed for a charity luncheon on San Francisco’s waterfront Wednesday when the sunroof suddenly exploded as they were driving under the Embarcadero Freeway.

The elevated freeway, badly damaged in the October 1989 earthquake, is being demolished.

“Whatever it was, it came down from the freeway, hit the sunroof and it just exploded,” Mullin said. “Me and Mitch, we were all covered with a million pieces of glass. It was real scary, man.

“It might have been a screw or a rock or a piece of concrete, I don’t know. All I know is that it was loud.”

Mayor Art Agnos also was at the charity event, but Mullin said he didn’t complain about the incident.

“I was going to ask the mayor what to do about it,” Mullin said, “but it was kind of a nice event and I didn’t want to bother him.”
