PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Westminster Scores Two on Bunt to Beat Edison

Dennis Barclay’s squeeze bunt resulted in two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Westminster beat Edison, 9-8, in a Sunset League baseball game Friday at Westminster.

Steve Murphy was on third and Scott Ashby on second with one out when Barclay bunted toward third. Murphy scored on the bunt and Ashby scored the winning run when the ball was thrown past first.

The teams were tied, 6-6, after seven innings and Edison scored two unearned runs in the eighth before Westminster (8-7, 2-1 in league) rallied for three.

Shayne White (1-1) got the victory, pitching four innings of relief. Kirk Pierce had two hits for Westminster.

In another Sunset League game:

Santa Ana 6, Huntington Beach 2--John Morales had three hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning, and three RBIs and Bill Johnson hit a bases-empty home run in the sixth inning for Santa Ana (8-4, 3-1). David Fausto (2-1) pitched six innings, striking out four and allowing three hits and one earned run.

In the Century League:

Foothill 6, Santa Ana Valley 5--Rob Higby had a single in the seventh to give host Foothill the victory. Santa Ana Valley started the inning with a 5-3 lead, but Foothill (6-7, 3-2 in league) rallied. Evan Lang had a two-run single to tie it, 5-5, and he later scored on Higby’s single. Jason Schwary (3-1) pitched seven innings for the victory.

Canyon 9, Orange 5--John Schumacher had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run for host Canyon (7-5-1, 3-2), which scored five runs in the first. Mike Casagranda (2-2) pitched five innings for the victory. Chris Snitko scored three runs for Canyon.

El Modena 4, Villa Park 2--Trailing, 2-1, in top of the seventh, Jay McGrath hit a two-run home run for visiting El Modena (7-3, 4-1). Danny White (1-1) pitched 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief for the victory. Villa Park is 7-7, 4-1.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 13, Ontario Christian 2--Mic Buehler had four hits, scored four runs and drove in four runs for visiting Orange Lutheran (8-2, 3-1). Mason Effertz (1-1) pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Orange Lutheran (8-2, 3-1).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 9, Western 6--Tim Carman (4-0) pitched a seven-hitter and struck out 11 for visiting Brea-Olinda (8-7, 4-1). Chris Briones hit a two-run home run in the first, and Jesse Willis had three hits and two RBIs for Brea-Olinda.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 13 Costa Mesa 8--Ruben Mora and Chris Watson each drove in three runs for Estancia (7-4, 4-1) at Costa Mesa. Mora had three hits and scored three runs and Watson had two hits.

Laguna Hills 8, Laguna Beach 0--Ted Wilkes went four for four with two home runs and three RBIs to lead host Laguna Hills (8-6, 4-1). Brian Kessler allowed only three hits in six innings for the victory. Kessler struck out eight.

Trabuco Hills 20, Century 5--Gibson Gomez had three hits, including a sixth-inning grand slam, and six RBIs for host Trabuco Hills. Josh Sewell had two hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning, and Steve Hite had three hits and three RBIs for Trabuco Hills (6-6, 3-2).

In the Sea View League:

University 3, Saddleback 2--Anthony Gonzalez had a run-scoring double to tie the game at 2, and he scored on a single by Jerry Apana as University (5-11, 3-2) rallied for two runs in the seventh to win at Saddleback. Brian Vail (4-3) pitched a seven-hitter for the victory.

Corona del Mar 8, Newport Harbor 5--John Fyke hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Tim DeCinces had two hits and three RBIs for Corona del Mar (4-5-1, 2-2-1). Neil Weber (2-1) pitched five innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight, for Corona del Mar.

Tustin 15, Woodbridge 4--Ben Munoz had two hits and four RBIs and Brett Hardy sparked a seven-run second inning with a grand slam for host Tustin (10-4, 5-0).

In nonleague baseball:

Liberty Christian 10, Calvary Chapel Downey 0--John Bucher (4-0) pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks for Liberty Christian (8-3). Justin Flagg had two hits and an RBI for Liberty Christian.
