Thomas Hearns stopped a shorter, lighter and less-experienced Ken Atkin in the third round of their fight at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on Saturday.
The 6-foot-2, 176 1/2-pound Hearns improved to 49-3-1 as he prepares for a June 3 title bout against World Boxing Assn. light-heavyweight champion Virgil Hill. The 5-7 Atkin (12-5) weighed 167 1/4 pounds.
“Ken was a tough guy,” Hearns said of the policeman from Smyrna, Tenn. “He wasn’t afraid or intimidated by my stature.”
