Tearing Down the House: A historic home in Detroit owned by singer Anita Baker was partially torn down despite a court order barring its demolition. Preservationists obtained the order Friday to save Chene House, a 19th-Century home; but part of it was bulldozed on Saturday. Baker and her husband had received approval to tear the building down from the Detroit Historic District Commission last week. Baker’s attorney said he did not receive the order preventing the demolition of the house until Monday. Baker and her husband, who live in Grosse Pointe, Mich., wanted to make room for an unspecified project.
