Santa Monica : City Receives 2 Awards

The city was presented with two national awards--one for transportation and one for communication--during a City Council meeting Tuesday night.

One award went to the Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines for “total performance” in transportation. It was presented by the North American Transit Research Group after the organization analyzed 45 bus lines nationwide and decided that Santa Monica’s “Big Blue Bus” was the most efficient in the country.

In 1987, the municipal bus lines was given a Total Achievement Award from the American Public Transit Assn., according to Bob Ayer, assistant director of the bus lines. The two transportation awards are the most prestigious in the business, Ayer said.

Mayor Judy Abdo presented the “Technology Achievement Award” to the city, awarded for the Public Electronic Network’s computer access to city politics. Given by Public Technology Inc., a nationwide nonprofit group, the award recognizes the city for providing “grass-roots participation . . . with a free public access computer network. . . . “
