Dr. Eugene F. Hoffman Sr.; Leading Physician

Dr. Eugene F. Hoffman Sr., a retired urologist who co-founded a physicians advisory committee for radio, television and motion pictures for the American Medical Assn., has died in a Fullerton hospital. He was 87.

A longtime resident of Glendale, Hoffman died Wednesday of cancer, said his daughter-in-law, Kathleen Hoffman.

Born the son of a doctor in Teutopolis, Ill., Hoffman received his doctorate of medicine in 1930 from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb. He operated a private practice in Los Angeles from 1935 to 1969 and served as chief of staff of the former Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles in 1961.

Hoffman was co-founder and later chairman of the American Medical Assn. Physicians Advisory Committee for Radio, Television and Motion Pictures, which provided technical medical advice to television’s “Ben Casey” and “Dr. Kildare” among other medical shows, his family said. He also served in the House of Delegates of the American Medical Assn. from 1949 to 1974, and was medical adviser to Blue Cross of California from 1951 to 1969 and senior medical adviser from 1970 to 1973. He also was a clinical professor of surgery in urology at USC from the early 1940s until 1972.

He was a member of The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem and the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles.

Hoffman is survived by his wife of 61 years, Cecilia Hoffman; son, Dr. Eugene F. Hoffman Jr. of Long Beach; brother Maurice Hoffman of Camano Island, Wash.; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A vigil is planned at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Church of the Incarnation, 1001 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the church with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles. Woods Glendale Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made to Dr. Eugene F. Hoffman Sr. Memorial Fund at Creighton University School of Medicine.
