Scuba Diver’s Body Found Off Catalina

County lifeguards on Saturday recovered the body of a scuba diver who apparently drowned off Catalina Island, authorities said.

The 41-year-old victim, who was not identified pending notification of relatives, had been under water for at least an hour before he was found at 3:25 p.m., said Lt. Ira Gruber of the Avalon lifeguard station.

The diver’s partner reported the victim missing in Big Geiger Cove near Two Harbors immediately after losing track of him. The victim had had trouble with his equipment at the surface of the 45-foot-deep cove and then suddenly submerged about 100 yards off shore, Gruber said. The two divers had launched from a sport dive boat called the Atlantis, he said.
