UCLA Men Win Meet, USC Places Fourth

UCLA’s Erik Smith threw the javelin a personal-best 235 feet 2 inches, sprinter Tony Miller won the 200 meters and placed third in the 100, and Mark Dani won the two-mile as the Bruins won a quadrangular meet at Drake Stadium Saturday.

UCLA had 187 1/2 points, Houston 147, Texas Christian 84 and USC 68 1/2.

Miller won the 200 in 21.00 seconds and ran the 100 in 10.55. Jon Drummond of TCU won the 100 in 10.37 and also ran the opening leg for the Horned Frogs’ winning 400-meter relay team.

Dani’s time in the two-mile was 9:05.39.

In the women’s competition, UCLA and Houston tied with 164 points, followed by USC (93) and TCU (48).

UCLA’s Janeene Vickers won the 100 meters (11.60), the 200 meters (23.20) and the 100-meter hurdles (13.57), and anchored the Bruins’ 1600-meter relay team, which finished third.

UCLA’s Tracie Millett won the shot put (52-4 1/2) and the discus (176-4).
